The Story of Nokomis
The Story of Nokomis
The Story of Nokomis

How did the community get it's name?

The community of Nokomis was named after the grandmother of Hiawatha, immortalized in Longfellow's poem.

A spider was quietly spinning his web in his own space. It was beside the sleeping space of Nokomis, the grandmother. Each day, Nokomis watched the spider at work, quietly spinning away. One day as she was watching him, her grandson came in. "Nokomis-iya!" he shouted, glancing at the spider. He stomped over to the spider, picked up a shoe and went to hit it.

"No-keegwa," the old lady whispered, "don't hurt him."

"Nokomis, why do you protect the spider?" asked the little boy.

The old lady smiled, but did not answer. When the boy left, the spider went to the old woman and thanked her for saving his life. He said to her, "For many days you have watched me spin and weave my web. You have admired my work. In return for saving my life, I will give you a gift."

He smiled his special spider smile and moved away, spinning as he went.

Soon the moon glistened on a magical silvery web moving gently in the window. "See how I spin?" he said. "See and learn, for each web will snare bad dreams. Only good dreams will go through the small hole. This is my gift to you. Use it so that only good dreams will be remembered. The bad dreams will become hopelessly entangled in the web."

Calusa Lakes is a great place to live, nestled in a wooded terrain in an environmentally aware and Florida Friendly atmosphere. Our collective vision is to maintain a welcoming community of active residents living in harmony with the privately owned golf course and within a beautiful, healthy, safe, natural and socially inclusive environment.

Calusa Lakes' beautiful wooded terrain highlights the natural setting of this outstanding, 18-hole presentation. The spacious course is nestled in an environmental community, with the homes set well back from play. The golf course weaves its way through a variety of Florida landscape and wildlife. The many pine and oak trees give a rare mid-Atlantic feel to the course.

Even with its many lakes, the course is player friendly. The rolling fairways, fair landing areas and new Champion Grass greens offer a unique and enjoyable golfing experience for players of all abilities.

Mission Valley Country Club was founded in 1967 by a small group of golfers looking for a challenging course to play and the camaraderie of club Members.

The original course was designed by David Wallace and the greens and bunkers were redesigned by Ted McAnlis in 1997. In 2003 the fairway bunkers were enhanced and modified by John Sanford.

In 2004 the Board approved a $1.7 million dollar budget to refurbish and expand the Clubhouse. This project began in August of 2005 and was completed in September of 2006.

Nokomis Beach

Nokomis Beach is located on Casey Key directly west of the Albee Road Bridge. It is Sarasota County’s oldest public beach. This is a family oriented beach and is also popular for fishing and picnicking.

This beach is one of the oldest beaches operated by Sarasota County. Portions of the site were acquired in the late 1940's and early 1950's. About 30 years later, the citizens of Sarasota County voted to expand the beach by an additional 600 feet. The results of the development of a dune restoration system in 1985 which includes five walkovers, has been very successful toward preserving and protecting the shoreline at this site.

2007 the restoration of the "Rudolph" Pavilion finally got done. The restrooms are in perfect condition, the boardwalks and decks are brand new as well, and there is even a meeting room available. The concession stand and more restrooms are in the works and will be completed in a few months.

The Legacy Trail

On March 28, 2008 Sarasota County opened the largest public recreation project ever constructed in the area, The Legacy Trail. Totaling more than 10 miles in length the trail runs from just south of the city of Sarasota to Venice following the former CSX railroad corridor.

Purchased through a partnership between Sarasota County and the Trust for Public Land in December 2004 for $11.75 million, The Legacy Trail is the backbone of network of trails planned in Sarasota County. The Legacy Trail is open from dawn to dusk with the rules for using the trail posted at various locations as well as at each trailhead entrance point.
