Sunny beaches with crystal-white, powdery sand that stretch for miles. You can stroll through Shops with all sorts of fashion, beach accessories and souvenirs. You will find Restaurants where you can grab a quick breakfast or lunch in your flip-flops and sandy toes, or where you can relax in style over an extraordinary candlelight dinner while watching the sea birds go to rest.
Originally it was named “Sarasota Key”. In the late 1920’s this 8-mile long, crescent-shaped Gulf Coast barrier island was renamed to “Siesta Key”. The new name perfectly reflects the laid back island lifestyle. “Siesta” means "mid-day nap" in Spanish (the noon of the Roman day, coming six hours after sunrise. Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2010 Douglas Harper). This does not mean that everybody is falling asleep at noon time, but on Siesta Key the clocks seem to tick a little slower than someplace else.
While its gulf beach waters are clear, aquamarine and turquoise blue, its beach is made of pure white, powdery, soft sand. The sand consists actually of 99 percent pure quartz, it is cool to the touch and cool on bare feet in the height of summer which makes the beach a great place to escape the heat on a mid-summers day.
Because of the unique sand content the beach has been rated consistently “the 2nd Best Beach in the Nation” by the Travel Channel.
Finally, in 2011, Siesta Key Beach was named the number 1 beach in the USA in the annual ratings by Dr. Beach (aka Dr. Stephen Leatherman, director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University).
Balmy breezes in the winter time, Dolphins and manatees, Pelicans, egrets, osprey, seagulls and a variety of shorebirds – on Siesta Key you are still in contact with Mother Nature.
You will see dolphins playing in the water, and once in a while a manatee floating by. At first you might be scared when you see their massive shadow in the water, but they are very gentle animals. Don’t try to touch the animal – just watch them.
There are three beach sections on Siesta: Siesta Public Beach is the main attraction, located mid-island off Midnight Pass and is the perfect spot to find the action. Facilities are numerous and include a concession stand, restrooms, volleyball nets, tennis courts and year-round lifeguards. | Siesta Key’s Turtle Beach is a relaxing beach situated two and a half miles south of Stickney Point Road. It is not as crowded as the Public Beach. Siesta Key - Palmer Point Beach begins at the south tip of Siesta Key and continues till the north end of Casey Key. Although there are no Lifeguards on duty, and there are no facilities present, it is a beautiful spot to be if you want to avoid the crowd.
Siesta Village is only a 5 minute walk away from the public beach. Here is where the heart of the island beats. The Village is a mostly pedestrian village area ideal for “People Watching” from sidewalk cafes while sipping a nice cold drink. Stores, shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars thrive in the midst of commercial and residential activities. You'll find a drug store with a post office and also a grocery and hardware store in this village area.
Homes for sale on Siesta open the door to a lifestyle that's more attitude than routine. Everything about Siesta Key reflects relaxed, fine casual living at its best. As a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly town, Siesta Key is easy to get around. With a quaint oceanfront village in the heart of the area, you can quickly find everything you're looking for.
Siesta Key homes for sale begin at the $300,000 level and can be priced as high as $10 Million. The north end of Siesta Key is considered by many to be the most desirable because of its prime location. The north bridge provides quick and easy access to the mainland and downtown Sarasota area.
However, it is a question of preferences. We like the lush tropical vegetation on the south end of the island just as much and there is a second draw bridge to the mainland as well.
If water is your love, Siesta Key is where you want to be. Yes, dear reader, homes directly on the Bay or with Ocean Front require a larger wallet, but with almost 50 miles of canals there are plenty of possibilities that may fulfill your dream and still fit into your budget.

| 1. Know about exclusions to coverage. For example, most insurance policies do not cover flood or earthquake damage as a standard item. These types of coverage must be bought separately. |
| 2. Know about dollar limitations on claims. Even if you are covered for a risk, there may be a limit on how much the insurer will pay. For example, many policies limit the amount paid for stolen jewelry unless items are insured separately. |
| 3. Know the replacement cost. If your home is destroyed you’ll receive money to replace it only to the maximum of your coverage, so be sure your insurance is sufficient. This means that if your home is insured for $150,000 and it costs $180,000 to replace it, you’ll only receive $150,000. |
| 4. Know the actual cash value. If you chose not to replace your home when it’s destroyed, you’ll receive replacement cost, less depreciation. This is called actual cash value. |
| 5. Know the liability. Generally your homeowner’s insurance covers you for accidents that happen to other people on your property, including medical care, court costs, and awards by the court. However, there is usually an upper limit to the amount of coverage provided. Be sure that it’s sufficient if you have significant assets. |
Catch a glimpse of Sarasota/Sarasota County Neighborhoods The architectural styles in Sarasota neighborhoods have a great bandwidth, ranging from “Old Florida Style” to Spanish - Mediterranean to Contemporary. They come in all sizes, colors and shapes, some of them are older homes, and some of them have been beautifully renovated. Quite a few of the older homes have been torn down and replaced by mini-mansions and elaborate estates. You can never get enough information about the neighborhoods before you decide to go one step further. Look around and get a feel, for some are the barrier islands the ultimate freedom – for others living on an island that is connected with the mainland only by two draw (vulnerable) bridges seems more like a “prison”. Be open minded and you might even end up in a surrounding you never dreamt of before, and maybe you will find out that the “Old Florida Style Home” you fell in love with while browsing through the real estate magazines months ago was not the right one for you anyway. If you are relocating to Sarasota Florida and searching for homes for sale or if you are looking for a second home or investment property, be prepared for a wide variety of different neighborhoods with different lifestyles. Sarasota - Homes for Sale Sarasota is a city located in Sarasota County on the south western coast of the US State of Florida. It is south of the Tampa Bay Area and north of Fort Myers. Its current official limits include Sarasota Bay and several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. These islands separating Sarasota Bay from the gulf near the city, known as keys, include Lido Key and Siesta Key, which are famous worldwide for the quality of their sandy beaches.
Today the keys that are included in the boundary of Sarasota are Lido Key, St. Armands Key, Otter Key, Coon Key, Bird Key, and portions of Siesta Key. Previously, Siesta Key was named Sarasota Key. At one time, it and all of Longboat Key were considered part of Sarasota and confusing contemporaneous references may be found discussing them. Longboat Key is the largest key separating the bay from the gulf, but it is now evenly divided by the new county line of 1921.
The portion of the key that parallels the Sarasota city boundary that extends to that new county line along the bay front of the mainland was removed from the city boundaries at the request of John Ringling in the mid-1920s, who sought to avoid city taxation of his planned developments at the southern tip of the key. Although they never were completed in the quickly faltering economy, those development concessions granted by the city never were reversed and the county has retained regulation of those lands ever since. In 1986 it became designated as a certified local government. Sarasota is a principal city of the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the seat of Sarasota County. It is among the communities included in a two-county federally-mandated Metropolitan Planning Organization that includes all of Sarasota and Manatee counties. According to the U. S. Census Bureau, Sarasota had a population of 52,488 in 2007. |
