Ringling Museum

Don’t miss the chance to stroll the grounds. The Ringling family had such a great impact on Sarasota; you should see the mansion and enjoy the fantastic art museum, brought to us by this famous circus magnate.

Botanical Garden
orchid

This flower-lover’s oasis on Sarasota Bay features one of the world’s largest collections of orchids and, by the way, it is the only botanical garden in the world that specializes in epiphytic plants.

Historic Spanish Point

This is what it looked like when the first settlers arrived in Florida. You will see a chapel and several houses built in the mid 1800. Take a tour and walk back in history –it is really interesting.

Amazing the size of those one family dwellings, some houses on Casey Key have probably bigger wine coolers.

Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda, these two communities are separated by the narrow, winding Peace River, which is alive with wildlife such as the Osprey and the Manatee. The river, Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico provide a wide variety of recreational opportunities in Port Charlotte. Port Charlotte has a great location, just twenty minutes to Sarasota, 25 minutes to the historic, charming town of Boca Grande, one hour to Fort Myers international Airport and less than one our to Tampa international Airport.

Besides being in one of the best locations in the state, Port Charlotte is still a fairly new town, most of the homes here are also either brand new or relatively new, many of which are on waterfront properties with lush tropical landscaping. Saltwater canals also run throughout most of the city, making waterfront homes abundant. These canals lead you to Charlotte Harbor and from there, the sparkling blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Port Charlotte has more than 165 miles of waterways providing access to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico and many more miles of natural shoreline bordering Charlotte Harbor and the Peace and Myakka Rivers. Nine of the sixteen golf courses located in Charlotte County are found in Port Charlotte. The Charlotte County Sports Park and Stadium is home to a variety of festivals and events throughout the year.

Punta Gorda

The name Punta Gorda means "Broad Point" and dates back to the landing of Ponce de Leon in the year 1513. Punta Gorda  is the only incorporated city in Charlotte County. In 2004 parts the city got really hit hard by hurricane Charley (video), the third named storm of the 2004 hurricane season. The 140 mile wind did a lot of damage and some empty lots are still a reminder of the storm.  But most of the repair work has been finished and the city recently rebuilt and revitalized the downtown area.

It has now beautiful cobblestone streets and gas lamp streetlights. The residential area features many brick streets lined with huge old royal palms and many old Florida-era tin-roofed homes with wide verandas. Laishley Park is right in the downtown area with a 400 foot fishing pier and a public boat launch.

The Charlotte Harbor area is perfect for boaters of all types, including kayaking and canoeing, flats fishing, sailing, wind-surfing, and just plain pleasure boating. A day trip to Cayo CostaState Park, accessible only by boat, offers some of the best shelling anywhere, and the “old time” restaurant on the tiny Cabbage Key  is always fun.

The City of North Port

In sheer size alone, the city of North Port is actually the third largest city in the entire state of Florida. But with just over 40,000 residents, it is not crowded by any means. There is plenty of space in North Port. 77 square miles of land and an 8,000-acre state forest, those are impressive numbers.  The city has three golf courses, and 150 miles of waterways for fishing and boating, some with direct access to the Myakka River. In 1985 the Myakka river was designated “Florida Wild and Scenic River” by Florida State legislature. It is only one of two rivers in the State to be recognized with this special status.

Famous for their Warm Mineral Springs state park, some believe that North Port is the true home of the Fountain of Youth. These mineral waters have a year round temperature of 87 degrees and offer the richest known density of minerals of any known spring in the world. The spring outputs more than 9 million gallons of new water daily, and its park offers wellness services for you to renew, recharge and relax in. The park also has a café for food and drink, and certain areas of the springs are available to rent for weddings, banquets or other gatherings.

North Port began some 50 years ago as North Port Charlotte as a sleepy hamlet. It took a while before the city answered the wake up calls but eventually it morphed into a thriving community. In the beginning it was a favorite place basically for retirees, but that changed over the years. Young families moved in and changed the picture completely.

Now that the market has slowed down a bit, competition is fierce and prices for homes are lower than in most other areas. Unfortunately the rate of foreclosures is a lot higher in North Port in comparison to the remainder of the county.

Nokomis, Florida

Nokomis is a small, historic town located between Sarasota and Venice near the Gulf of Mexico. There is also another community in Escambia County, Florida (in the northwestern part of the state) which is named Nokomis, but that is a different location. Nokomis has a small population just above 3000 souls and is most well known for its beach, which is located about a half-mile from town. The Nokomis Beach and Park is comprised of 22 acres with 1,700 feet running alongside the Gulf of Mexico, and 3,200 feet along the Intracoastal Waterway. This area is known for its stunning white sand beaches that are ideal for shelling and beachcombing. All types of other beach activities are available such as swimming, diving, fishing and boating.

Part of Sarasota County, Nokomis is rich in local history and modern day conveniences. The town of Nokomis was named after the grandmother of the famous Native American Hiawatha, and there is plenty to explore in nearby historic Venice and Osprey. Many celebrities and famous people call this area home in the winter months, and with beautiful weather year round and gorgeous Gulf sunsets, why wouldn’t they? By the way, Stephen King resides on Casey Key during the winter months. Don't ask us how he manages to come up with his dark stories in an environment like this. However, Jimmy Buffet has a different spin.

Not just the home of the rich and famous, Nokomis is the perfect place for young families, retirees and winter residents alike. Whether you are looking for a secluded beach front property or a beautiful home in a gated community, Nokomis may have just what you have been searching for. There are prestigious gated waterfront communities such as Shakett Creek Pointe which offers direct access to the Gulf of Mexico. Waterfront homes are abundant in Nokomis, with a number of canals which access to beautiful Dona, Roberts, and Lyons Bay and of course, the Gulf of Mexico.  Many of the waterfront homes in Nokomis are more moderately priced than those in nearby Sarasota.

Neighborhoods: Calusa Lakes, Sorrento Woods, Mission Valley, Laurel Landings, Laurel Woodlands.

Osprey, yes it is named after the bird

Osprey, located on Little Sarasota Bay, is just south of Sarasota in what's referred to as "unincorporated" Sarasota County. Osprey is a thriving community with abundant residential opportunities. It is a diverse community with multi-million dollar homes located on the Intracoastal Waterway and mobile home parks just up the road from the same luxury homes. There are many new luxury and upscale home developments underway in Osprey by many of Sarasota's top builders.

Prehistoric people from as far back as 3000 BC lived in the area of Osprey now known as Spanish Point. They lived along the shoreline and built villages there. They buried their dead in a burial mound along with things like shell necklaces and pottery.

You can’t talk about the history of Osprey or Sarasota without mentioning the name of Bertha Honore Palmer. In 1910 Bertha Palmer, the widow of Chicago magnate Potter Palmer chose Osprey for her winter estate. She was an avid gardener and delighted in experimenting with exotic plants. The area where she settled was called “The Webb” estate and included 350 acres, but at one point Bertha owned about one third of Sarasota County. Her heirs generously donated 30 acres of land which is known as the   ”Historic Spanish Point”, a place where the early pioneer buildings were preserved.

Neighborhoods: The Oaks, Southbay Yacht & Racquet Club, Woodlands of Rivendell, Willowbend.
