Timucuan and Caloosa Indians lived on Longboat Key for hundreds of years. Shell mounds have been found showing that picnics and fish fries were commonplace.
Beginning with the year 1539 the world of the Indians changed dramatically. Spanish sailboats appeared on the horizon and Hernando DeSoto is thought to have visited here with his scout, Juan Anasco, manning the “longboat” as it went through the north pass. Thomas Mann, a Civil War veteran, settled on the island in 1891 and homesteaded 144 acres. Homes were built on the north end of Longboat Key in the early 1900's, some of which are still standing.
In the 1920's John Ringling bought hundreds of acres on the south end and planted Australian pine trees along Ringling Boulevard (now Gulf of Mexico Drive) from one end of the island to the other. But still, in the 30's and during the second world war it remained pretty calm on Longboat Key. Eventually it got roused from sleep. More and more people discovered the beauty of island. The town of Longboat Key was incorporated on Nov. 14, 1955. This was somewhat of a starting point and the "gold rush" began.
Much of the land area of Longboat Key is now occupied by either single family homes or big condominium apartments. Most of the condominium associations co-own common elements which comprise pools, tennis courts, sites with water views and access to beaches.
Almost the entire land area of Longboat Key is occupied. There are very few building spots left. |
